Did it ever cross your mind if there are some things that airlines don’t want you to know? There are some incidents wherein you will wonder if there is something mysterious happening around such as overbooked flights, cancellations and excessive delays which only add to your expenses.
The following are things that airlines don’t want you to know:
- You’re entitled to a compensation – say no to vouchers.
Never settle for vouchers if you were involuntarily bumped due to overbooking. They are obliged to arrange a new flight for you within 2 hours and if they don’t then they need to compensate you.
- You can get hard cash even with new travel arrangements.
If you were involuntarily bumped from a flight and you arrive where you’re going between 1-2 hours past your original arrival time (domestic flight) or between 1-4 hours (international), then they owe you a compensation of 200% of your one-way fare and 400% for flights more than 2 hours later.
- You can cancel within 24 hours of booking without any charge.
Most airlines let their passengers cancel/change their ticket up to 7 days before the scheduled flight and still get the money back. Additionally, you need to directly book your flight with the airline’s website, not through a third-party booking site.
- The airline can book you a seat on their competitor’s flight if you are delayed.
They are required to rebook you at no extra cost, even on their competitor, if your flight is delayed.
- They are required to pay the difference if your itinerary gets changed.
They are obliged to cover the expenses as well as extra fees if you’ve been arranged for an alternate transportation due to a flight delay.
- You can still use your unused ticket for a delayed/canceled flight
Your unused ticket due to a delayed or canceled flight can still be used as an airline credit.
- You can refund a non-refundable ticket.
When they’re at fault, they owe you money. If a flight was canceled, delayed, re-scheduled or there’s a route change – you can get a full refund even if your ticket is non-refundable.
- The additional fees are also refundable.
When your flight was severely delayed or canceled, make sure that you also mention the fees you paid for checking your bag, for some extra legroom or boarding early.
- In Europe, the passengers are entitled to “even more”.
The airlines are required to shoulder the food and hotel of the passengers if the flight was canceled due to the airline’s fault. If the flight was delayed for 7 days, you will get a full refund.
- The airlines owe you for a delayed luggage.
They need to pay you per day for delayed baggage, but not lost.
A good flight deal is a bit hard to find but with patience and persistence, you can find everything that you wanted.
